Snow. Yuck.

I didn’t attempt to drive home from work until 6:15, and made it home just before 7 p.m. via residential streets. Not bad, considering my usual commute is 15 to 25 minutes on a good day, depending on traffic.

I-435 eastbound was obviously going nowhere fast, so I went north on Metcalf to 95th, then to avoid the traffic jam near State Line, I jagged over on a side street that eventually connected with Lee Blvd, to 79th, to Main, to 75th. The streets on the Kansas side of State Line are slushy but moving along nicely. But on the Missouri side, not so much. My neighborhood streets are solid sheets of ice. I don’t expect them to be any better in the morning.

But, to my delight, the new Columbia snow boots I ordered online were waiting for me on the porch when I got home, AND they fit. Yay! (Snow + Birkenstock clogs = cold wet feet, BTW). And gas has dropped to $1.31 per gallon.

Yay! When I was at Mom’s last week, I was trying to negotiate 8 inches of snow in slip-on tennis shoes. In desperation, I bought a pair of boots at Wally-world, but they have absolutely no traction. None. Online shopping to the rescue!

Saw three accidents in just three miles in OP (between my house and son’s school). The ice sheet under the snow was hard to see.

The streets were much worse in late afternoon. I could see the corner of College and Lowell from the breakroom window, and the cars were having a very difficult time negotiating their way downhill. Glad to hear you only saw the accidents, and weren’t part of them!

I did see a couple of people

(earlier in the day) turn right onto Cherry from Armour and slide sideways to the left-hand curb. It got better as more people on it– we do not get plowed/salted unless it’s more than four inches of snow or a sheet of ice because we are basically a one-block street.

For once I’m glad I did not have to go anywhere to do work. On the other hand, I was doing some brainstorming and think I need to get one of my big pads out and do it graphically before I go further.
