Last night, the elderly gentleman ahead of me at the grocery checkout was trying to buy $6 worth of groceries with $3 and change.
The first item he nixed was the loaf of white bread. The second item he nixed was the dozen eggs. As he was considering whether or not to nix the package of American cheese, I told the cashier to put it all back in his bag and I would pay for it. The man was embarrased, but grateful. The cashier was relieved. I am sad that the situation presented itself this way.
I suspect that little bag of groceries is all that little old man will get to eat this week. The question is: How will he buy groceries next week?

You’re a good person.

That was a very nice thing to do.
As for next week, his SS check probably came today – most of them are delivered on the 3rd of any given month. I just hope he does get one and will be able to eat next week.

I hope so.

about my niece, with her four boys. Her husband is the sole provider and while he works at a good place with insurance, he does not make THAT much money (he’s a low-level programmer of some kind). At Christmas she was talking about trying to make more vegetarian meals because meat was expensive. They’re growing boys.
(“God will provide, I don’t need to work.”)
You’re a good person.

Our workplace is having six weeks of Harvester collections. Different stuff every week. It is getting really rough for those on limited incomes. I’m glad you could help the old man.

And alas there are folks
who’d rather have their stomach pinch rather than ask for anything. I would guess that elderly gentleman would be one of them.

Yes, you are a good person.
And we don’t need any more reasons to hate the Bush regime.

I’m glad the gentleman was grateful. I don’t mind helping those folks. It’s the ones that seem to think they’re entitled that irk me. Good for you!

I agree. He definitely seemed to be in need.
