Mushrooms….

It was a bit damp out there today, so we left early and missed the Jolly Rogers All Request Show and the Pub Sing. However, but we did manage to catch an early Jolly Rogers show, a performance by the Musical Blades, and part of the shows by the Mallorys, Mental Pause, the Washing Wenches, and several madrigal groups.

We also made the rounds of the shops and saw several friends. We also ate the iconic turkey leg for lunch, which was much more tasty and filling than I remember.

The mud was thick and the rain persistent, but we still managed to have a good time.

    You were brave adventurers

I can recall wetter Fests, then again, I counted my medallions the other day and a) I know I lost one in Becky Koop’s booth because it went down between the floorboards and when I stood up popped off and b) haven’t gotten the one for this year and have participated for 23 years in some function or another.

    Yikes.

The haybales started sprouting earlier than usual, but it has been very wet. Almost as wet as ’93. The area in the old SCA area (with the giant knight sculpture, if it’s still there) has a really well-engineered tile drain system in the whole area because of ’93. They realized the fighting area would never be able to maintain sufficient drainage unless they put in a system. We had an engineer volunteer and it was made so.

That was also the year I remember sending kids home with hypothermia. “Call yer mom.” (kid fetches mom, who is on site, which is brilliant because we didn’t have cell phones then), “Take your kid home or put them in your car with the heater on. They’re too cold and wet and could get really sick.

I never had to convince anyone, just tell them it’s happening.

Today was damn close. If I hadn’t driven the van (which has heated seats) I would have been very bad off; As it was, I almost couldn’t step enough to get in (we had to park on the south side of Fest because of a concert, and it was on an uphill slope, with the van step way higher than the ground) and when I got in I realized I was really stiff the cold and it hurt to drive for the first several miles. Heat made things better.

      Re: You were brave adventurers

I’m gimping about as it is this weekend, but I survived the rain and chill better than I expected. I only had two or three scary moments: one in a mud slick about 10 feet from the mushrooms, another when my cane made contact with something that rolled away, rather than the ground itself. As I told Mike, sometimes the weather has to intervene just to keep things interesting…..

And to think I ALMOST wore shorts today….. so glad I didn’t!

BTW it was good to see you. You look great! Hugs.

I was wiped out after Saturday’s visit. Don’t know if it was the cold, or the sugar in the hot cocoa afterward, but I went out like a light.
